Out of Birhor’s total
population, around 10% reside in five tandas of Bagodar and Saria
blocks of Giridih district. They live according to their traditional
primitive lifestyle and deprived of basic amenities hence, suffer
from stark poverty, starvation, illiteracy and poor health. Due to
lack of literacy and education, Birhors live in oblivion of their
basic rights and unable to express their feeling before society. In
the given situation, District Administration felt need of a Tanda
and people centred programme to be initiated in Giridih district so
that the comprehensive development of Birhors could be ensured
without hampering their socio – cultural outlook.
Deputy Commissioner of
Giridih district, Ms. Vandana Dadel, personally took interest in the
matter and visited Birhor Tandas to gauge the existing situation in
which Birhors are bound to live. She asked officers of all concerned
departments to visit these tandas and try to develop a plan for each
and every tanda so that we can stitch plans of different departments
and make it a comprehensive and convergent development plan for
Birhors.
On the basis of
availability of manpower and other resources, the Education
Department / Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan were adjudged as nodal agency for
the programme. Different departments including RCH presented a work
plan for health intervention in Birhor tandas. Meanwhile, Education
Department asked
Vanvasi
Vikas Ashram to conduct household survey of five Birhor tandas and
identify major problems and issues need to be taken care off during
comprehensive planning process. Later, District Commissioner,
Ms, Vandana Dadel called meeting of all concerned officials of
different departments and decided to initiate a comprehensive
development programme for Birhors living in five tandas of Bagodar
and Saria blocks.
The Deputy Commissioner
of Giridih district, Ms. Vandana Dadel has taken it as one of the
innovative concept where all concerned departments come together and
work in a concerted manner so that the target of comprehensive
development of near - extinction primitive tribe group, Birhor in
Giridih district could be ascertained and the convergent development
model could be presented before state as well as country. The role
of Education department in putting initial fuel and momentum to the
highly ambitious project is significant. The involvement of NGOs
further consolidates the field level involvement and commitment of
the district administration.
